SEWARD, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball program, in spite of a team-high 13 points from Rynn Osthus, endured a 90-58 loss at the hands of No. 22 Concordia University in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday from Friedrich Arena in Seward, Neb.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Free throws from senior point guard Kaylee Kirk and a 3-pointer from Osthus pushed Dakota Wesleyan out to a slight edge, 7-6, near the midway point of the first quarter. Osthus finished the day 3-of-5 from beyond the arch along with six rebounds, and DWU controlled the pace to begin the game.
Concordia, who shot 50.7% from the floor, pieced together a barrage of 3-pointers of its own and controlled an 11-9 lead with 3:14 remaining in the quarter. Osthus, the junior guard from De Smet, S.D., knocked down a second triple off a dish from Morgan Edelman which propelled the Tigers (14-4, 6-4 GPAC) back out in front briefly, 12-11. Though, CUNE held the eight-point, 19-12, advantage as the game reached the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs (11-6, 8-3 GPAC) took firm control of the game in the second frame as Concordia closed the period on a 17-3 run despite a 3-pointer from Matti Reiner. Reiner tallied nine points in the outing while CUNE won the quarter 26-12 and entered the lockeroom with the 45-24 edge.
An old-fashioned 3-point play by Lacey Sprakel followed by a five-point swing from Osthus brought the Blue and Gray to within 18 points, 52-34, early in the third frame. Regardless of the Tiger momentum, both teams exchanged field goals for the length of the period, and CUNE outscored Dakota Wesleyan 23-18. Aspen Hansen and Reiner capped off the stanza with a pair of layups.
With the game in control, the Bulldogs used a 22-16 margin in the final 10 minutes of action to secure the 90-58 home victory. Concordia knocked down 10 3-pointers on the afternoon and shot 41.7% from 3-point range. For DWU, Kirk registered eight points and three assists and shot 4-of-4 from the charity stripe while the Tigers converted 80.0% from the free-throw line.
