JAMESTOWN, N.D.– The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team traveled north for the weekend to take on the University of Jamestown for a pair of doubleheaders. DWU dropped all four Great Plains Athletic Conference games on Saturday and Sunday to Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D.
The Tigers dropped the first game of the weekend by a score of 10-5. DWU took an early 2-0 lead following a Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) RBI single and a Daulton Wilcoxen (Council Bluffs, Iowa) RBI single to left field. However, Jamestown cut that lead in half after the bottom half of the frame as DWU led 2-1.
Luke LeMay (St. Paul, Minn.) kicked off the second inning with a solo-shot homerun to help the Tigers (10-17, 4-12 GPAC) extend their lead back to two runs. The Jimmies took their first lead of the game after posting four runs in the bottom of the inning after a two-run homerun highlighted the bottom half of the inning.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of the third frame after a Tyler Torres (Novato, Calif.) RBI single, while DeMers also scored. Despite DWU tying the game, the Jimmies (25-12, 11-5 GPAC) tacked on five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 10-5 lead. Neither team scored another run as Jamestown came away with the victory.
In the second game, it was Jamestown coming away with a 12-6 win. Both teams opened the game with a run in the first inning, as Torres connected on an RBI single to left field. Jamestown added three runs over the next two innings to hold a 4-1 advantage.
But, three runs by DWU in the top of the fourth helped tie the game. Torres began the inning with a double down the left-field line. LeMay came to the plate moments later and brought Torres home with a single, followed by a pair of runs.
However, the Jimmies regained the lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Torres once again came to the plate attempting to kickstart a late rally. He crushed a two-run homerun over the center-field fence to pull DWU within four runs. But Jamestown never relinquished its lead to take the second game on Saturday.
In the first game on Sunday, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of runs on RBI singles. Jamestown wasted no time to take the lead as they notched a homerun and a three-run double in the bottom of the first frame.
The remainder of the game was a defensive showing as Jamestown added two runs through the final six frames, while DWU did not muster another run, with the Jimmies taking a 6-2 victory.
The final game of the weekend saw Jamestown come away with an 8-0 defeat of DWU. The Tigers recorded eight hits in the game as the offense struggled to get into a rhythm.
Torres finished the four-game stretch going 5-for-12 with four RBIs and a pair of runs scored. DeMers finished 5-for-14 with a run batted in, while Wilcoxen went 7-for-15 with two RBIs. Seth Christiansen (Victor, Idaho) pitched five innings on the mound as he struck out eight batters, while Jared Jones (Edmond, Okla.) pitched 7.1 innings and struck out seven batters in the final game of the weekend.
DWU returns to the diamond against Doane University in four games on Saturday and Sunday in Crete, Neb.
