Jamestown, N.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw in double overtime versus conference foe University of Jamestown on Wednesday evening from Jimmie Turf Field in Jamestown, N.D. Sophomore right back Benjamin Lazcano pushed across the tying goal in the 83rd minute.
It was the DWU defensive back line finding itself reeling in the early going as Jamestown attempted multiple shots to begin the period. Following a pair of defensive saves by junior goalkeeper Hunter Birozy, the Jimmies (6-7-3, 4-4-2 GPAC) struck first with a goal in the 40th minute claiming the 1-0 lead.
Dealt with the one-goal deficit, the Tiger (4-12-1, 3-6-1 GPAC) offensive attack responded seconds before the half with an opportunity on goal. Luis Lescure attempted a late header, yet; UJ held the 1-0 lead at the intermission.
A corner kick by Lazcano, and an ensuing shot by Tyler Anderson midway through the second period gave Dakota Wesleyan a chance at the equalizer, however, the score remained unbothered.
Lazcano, who tallied his first goal of the season, evened the match at 1-1 in the 82nd minute. Despite a pair of late shots by the Jimmies, the matched reached the end of regulation knotted at 1-1.
In the first overtime, both defensive back lines strengthened up while Tiger freshman forward Zarko Sinha nearly sealed the contest for Dakota Wesleyan with a shot off the crossbar in the 96th minute.
Unable to find the back of the net, both teams entered the second period hoping to secure the game-winning goal. Jamestown notched a pair of close opportunities on goal in the final moments of the match, however, the game ended in a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
Six different Tigers ended the night with a shot while Birozy finished with six saves on seven shots on goal.
With just one final regular-season match left on the 2021 schedule, the Blue and Gray face Morningside University at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
