MITCHELL, S.D. – Competing in their first track meet of 2021 and their first meet in almost two months, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's track and field team prepares to make the most of their opportunity as they host the DWU Invitational at 10 a.m. on Friday at the DWU Avera/Sports & Wellness Complex in Mitchell.
On Nov. 21, the DWU women competed at the Dordt Triangular and compiled a handful of top placements. Picking up where they left off a year ago, Lydia Gerber (Canton, S.D.) and Lia Guigui (Rapid City, S.D.) each picked up first-place finishes. Gerber took first in the triple jump after a leap of 36-4.75 feet (11.09m), while Guigui finished with a best of 5-3 feet (1.60m) for her first-place finish in the high jump.
Gerber looks to continue her strong start to the season after having an impressive finish to her junior campaign where she took 12th at the national meet. For Guigui, she also looks to build on a solid season last year after taking fourth place at the GPAC Championships with a jump of 1.55 meters in the high jump.
Not having competed last year, Morgan Taft (Norris, S.D.) looks to continue her impressive start to the 2020-21 season. At the Dordt Triangular, she took first place in the shot put and weight throw with a toss of 36-4 feet (11.07m) in the shot put and a mark of 49-1.5 (14.97m) in the weight throw.
Katlyn Briggs (Plankinton, S.D.) completed her volleyball season in November and looks to turn her attention towards the track and field season. She also took part in the Dordt Triangular as she took second place in the shot put after a best throw of 35-10.5 feet (10.93m).
In the sprints, the duo of Gerber and Guigui look to anchor the Tigers. Last year, Gerber just missed out of the national-qualifying time in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.82 seconds. Guigui also had a solid performance at the conference championships after moving into the DWU top-10 list.
Following the cross-country season, the likes of Tessa Kilber (Ipswich, S.D.), Morgan Oedekoven (Pierre, S.D.) and Macey Bohl (Garretson, S.D.) look for strong starts to the indoor season in the distance events. Looking to return to all-american status is thrower Mikaela Stofferahn (Dell Rapids, S.D.). In 2019, she took eighth at the national meet with a throw of 45-7.25 feet (13.90m) in the shot put. She also tallied a personal best throw of 46-9 feet (14.25m) in the weight throw last year.
