MITCHELL, S.D. – Josh Endres ended his career by setting two records and Jon Bane set himself up for his fourth and final season by setting his second record in as many games Saturday as the Dakota Wesleyan University football team beta Midland University 21-14 to end the season Saturday afternoon at Joe Quintal Field.
The Tigers end the year 6-4 overall and 5-4 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. This marks the second 6-4 mark in as many years for DWU, and just the third winning season since 1993. Midland finishes 2012 with a 4-6 overall mark and a 3-6 GPAC record.
Endres, who set the record for rushing yards in a game in 2010, took over as the school's single-season rushing leader and career rushing leader Saturday afternoon. He broke the career rushing record on his first carry of the game, and set the single-season mark on a 70-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the game. He ends his career with 3,329 total yards and ran for 1,302 yards this season. The previous career record was 3,151 and the single-season record was 1,296.
Bane, who became the school's all-time leading passer last week against Nebraska Wesleyan, took over the top of the career total offense list Saturday afternoon. He finished the day with 199 yards of total offense to push his three-year total to 6,982 yards. The previous record was 6,866. Bane has 6,894 passing yards in three seasons at Dakota Wesleyan, and threw for 2,157 this year – good for fifth on the single-season passing chart.
Saturday's game was a defensive battle to start. Both teams punted on all of their first-quarter drives. The Tigers faked a field-goal attempt in the second quarter, but kicker Dan Porter was tackled before he could throw the ball. A 41-yard field-goal attempt by Treyton Buresh was short on the Warriors' next drive, and both teams were scoreless at halftime.
The Tigers got onto the board first just over 10 minutes into the third quarter when Bane threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Arthur Brown. Midland fumbled on its next possession and Matt McManus recovered for DWU, but the Tigers were forced to punt. Dakota Wesleyan made it 14-0 early in the fourth on a 59-yard pass from Bane to Brown, but Midland responded with a long drive and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mike Karls to Jared Pelzer to make it 14-7.
Midland forced and recovered a DWU fumble with 1:22 to play, but Dustin Bergmeier intercepted Karls' pass and Endres broke free for his 70-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 21-7 with 44 seconds left in the game. The Warriors scored once more on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Karls to Kene Martin, and recovered the ensuing onside kick, but a penalty gave the Tigers the ball back with seconds left on the clock.
Endres finished the day with 181 rushing yards on 32 carries. Bane was 16-for-25 for 210 yards and two touchdowns, and Brown caught seven passes for 141 yards. Derek Carlson also had two catches for 40 yards. As a team, DWU ran for 188 yards and threw for 210. Midland threw for 200 and ran for 167. Mike Barnaud led the DWU defense with 12 tackles and Brady Bonte added 10. Chris Ferera had eight tackles, including 3.5 for a loss of 10 yards.
Saturday marked the final game in a Tiger uniform for 14 DWU football players, including Endres, Barnaud and Ferera.
