Hammer wins, Forgey qualifies for nationals at SDSU
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men and women track and field teams competed in the South Dakota State University Open in Brookings, S.D. on Friday.

For the DWU women senior Skylar Forgey (Colome, S.D.) had a dominant day. Forgey qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Championships in the 800-meter run, breaking her own school record. Forgey finished in second place with a time of 2:18.71.
Sophomore Shailhyn Schweigert (Burke, S.D.) also competed in the 800-meter run finishing in 11th place with a 2:33.15. Freshman Kelsie King (Mission Viejo, Calif.) finished the 5,000-meter run in eighth with a 21:03.38.
Freshman Meghan Travis (Minneota, Minn.), also a member of the DWU women's basketball team, competed in the high jump placing fourth with a height of 1.50 meters. Freshman Kristen Longville (Lake Preston, S.D.) had a successful day as she finished in first place in the triple jump with a leap of 10.22 meters. She also placed sixth in the long jump at 4.66 meters.
On the men's side, freshman Ben Hammer (Dell Rapids, S.D.) continues to compete at a high level. Hammer finished the shot put in first place with a throw of 15.15 meters. Hammer also competed in the weight throw, he finished in 11th place with a toss of 13.01 meters.
Sophomore Dakota Bodden (Tabor, S.D.) finished the 60-meter dash in 10th. Bodden and the 60-meter hurdles in sixth place with a time of 9.37. Freshman Brandon Kocmich (Dante, S.D.) finished close behind, completing the 60-meter dash in 7.43 for 12th place. Kochmich finished the 200-meter dash in 23.83 for 14th place and the 400-meter dash in 52.68 for 11th place. Sophomore Lane Tibbs (Kenesaw, Neb.) had an eighth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 16:04.39. Senior Daniel Porter (Plattsmouth, Neb.) placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.56 meters.
Senior Nicole Court-Menendez (Lewiston, Maine) will compete in the racewalk at the Snowbird Open hosted by Illinois College this Saturday. The Tiger track and field teams will be back in action at the Buena Vista Invite Saturday, Jan. 30 in Storm Lake, Iowa.
