JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The 2016 Dakota Wesleyan University indoor track and field season came to a close with three athletes competing at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn.
The day was a memorable one for senior women's team member Skylar Forgey (Colome, S.D.) who stepped onto the podium for the first time in her career. After literally collapsing across the finish line in the preliminary round of the 1,000-meter run to earn a spot in the final, Forgey put together another solid race to close her indoor career in style.
Forgey finished the final in fifth place to earn her first NAIA All-American honor. She crossed the line in 2 minutes, 58.57 seconds, narrowly ahead of Dordt College's Justine Van Zee (2:58.95). Forgey earned four points in the team standings for DWU, giving the Tigers a 28th-place finish with nine points. Wayland Baptist captured the team crown with 72 points.
Also competing for the Tiger women was freshman jumper Kamberlyn Lamer (Hartford, S.D.). In her NAIA championship debut, Lamer recorded one leap at a distance of 10.69 meters, good enough for 20th place.
The lone Tiger men's team competitor at the event was freshman thrower Ben Hammer (Dell Rapids, S.D.). In the shot put, Hammer finished 15th out of 25 competitors with a toss of 15.27 meters. The men's team title went to Indiana Tech with a total of 105 points.
The Tiger track teams return to action for the outdoor season, starting with the Wayne State Wildcat Classic March 25-26 in Wayne, Neb.
