ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team took on Dakota State University and No. 10 Valley City State University in a non-conference action, beating DSU 7-4 in the first game, and took down VCSU 3-1 in the second game on Friday in Aberdeen, S.D.
After a scoreless first inning, The Trojans (0-5) scored three-straight runs to take a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third frame.
Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) put the Tigers (6-2) ahead thanks to a bases clearing grand slam over the left field fence. DWU erupted for seven runs in the third inning off five hits and one Trojan error to take a 7-3 lead.
DSU added one more run in the top of the fourth inning, but that was all they could add, as the Tigers shut the door to win, 7-4.
Garcia led the way for the Tigers going 2-for-3 with a grand slam and 4 RBIs, as Mikael Smith (Brandon, S.D.) also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Madeline Else (Holstein, Iowa) went 2-for-2 at the plate and chipped in an RBI.
In the second game against Valley City State, the Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage thanks to a three-run homerun from Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) in the top of the first inning.
The Vikings (1-5) could only muster one run throughout the rest of the game, as Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) picked up the win on the mound. She surrendered only one run on four hits in five complete innings of work. Devany Farris (Cheyenne, Wyo.) pitched two scoreless innings while only surrendering one hit.
Gabel paced the Tigers scoring attack as she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Kindra Clark (Garretson, S.D.) and Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) each notched a hit as well.
