TUCSON, Ariz. – It was a pitchers' duel between the Dakota Wesleyan University and Presentation College baseball teams, until PC broke through in the end and took the first game of the Tucson Invitational, 4-0 Friday night in Tucson, Ariz.
Junior pitcher Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) kicked off the Tucson Invitational with an impressive start as he did not allow a Saints (2-3) hit until the fifth inning. In the fifth frame, PC recorded two hits, but the Tiger (1-3) defense held strong as they tallied three outs and left two runners on base.
The Tigers got the bats swinging in the top of the sixth inning. JT Miller (Harrisburg, S.D.) began the inning with a walk. Three batters later, Chandler Bakley (Martin, S.D.) reached on a fielder's choice, as Miller reached third base. However, the Tigers were unable to capitalize as they left two runners on base.
PC took over the game with three runs in the seventh inning and a run in the eighth. The runs were enough as PC downed the Tigers.
Bakley finished 1-for-4 with a double, as Landon Neugebauer (Mitchell, S.D.), Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) and Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) each went 1-for-3 at the plate. Boerger was tabbed with the loss as he pitched six and two-third innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just four hits.
The Tigers take on Concordia University at 4 p.m. and Presentation at 7:30 p.m. today in Tucson, Ariz.
