Baseball splits with Jimmies
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference two-game series with the University of Jamestown with DWU taking game one, 2-1 and UJ winning game two, 7-5 Sunday at Drake Field in Mitchell, S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference two-game series with the University of Jamestown with DWU taking game one, 2-1 and UJ winning game two, 7-5 Sunday at Drake Field in Mitchell, S.D.
Dominique Boerger (Milbank, S.D.) came out firing away on the mound for the Tigers (11-14, 5-5 GPAC) in the opening game. Through the first three innings he recorded eight strikeouts to hold the Jimmies' (16-10, 6-4 GPAC) batters at bay.
In the fourth inning, Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) connected on a one-run single to put DWU on the scoreboard. Three innings later, Wes Anderson (Duluth, Minn.) singled to right field, bringing home another run. UJ added a run in the bottom half of the frame, but could not comeback as the Tigers took game one.
Boerger pitched seven innings as he struck out 12 batters and allowed just four hits and one earned run. Harter went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Anderson finished 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
Neither team could get their bats going in the second game until DWU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning. Tyler Torres (Novato, Calif.) singled to right field to bring home the first run of the game. A few batters later, Cole Gassman (Canova, S.D.) reached on a fielder's choice that brought home another run. Next, Anderson smacked a two-run single to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
UJ was able to add a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to pull within three runs. However, Harter helped the Tigers regain a four-run lead as he stole home and scored in the top of the fifth inning.
The Jimmies tallied three runs in the bottom half of the frame and one run in the next inning to tie the game, 5-5. In the eighth inning, Jamestown took its' first lead of the day in either game as they recorded a pair of runs, pushing them to victory.
Anderson led the way as he went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Torres finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in and a run. Gassman tallied the final RBI for the Tigers. Gavin Reichmuth (Chandler, Ariz.) pitched five innings as he struck out two batters, while Layne Stafford (Arlington, Neb.) struck out three batters.
DWU returns to the diamond to play Jamestown tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D.
