TIGERS SWEPT BY MUSTANGS IN COLD/WINDY CONDITIONS
Sioux City, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan baseball team fell to the Morningside Mustangs in today's cold and windy doubleheader by scores of 13-5 in game one and 17-4 in game two. The Mustangs were locked in at the plate collecting 11 hits in both games, but really taking advantage of the struggle with command by the Tigers staff on the mound. DWU staff issued 20 walks/hit by pitches between the two games. Morningside runners were also moving up bases all day with Dakota Wesleyan staff recording 13 wild pitches in the two games. DWU, despite being outscored 30-9 on the day was only outhit 12-22. The Tigers also committed five errors between the two games resulting in four unearned runs. Lane Darrow was one of the main sources of offense on the day going 2 for 7 with four runs, a triple, one run batted in and a stolen base. Diego Jirau continued to be one of the best bats in the lineup going 2 for 3 with a run and walk in game one and 1 for 2 and a run batted in in game two.
Alexander Mizsak got the start in game one and took the loss after being removed in the second frame, where it appeared Mizsak was having discomfort with his throwing elbow. Mizsak was relieved by Jereko Martinez who threw the remaining 4.2 innings surrendering seven earned in the process. In game two freshman, Dexter Payne toed the rubber. Payne cruised through the first inning but then ran into trouble in the second giving up six runs, with four coming off a grandslam. Besides the home run, Payne issued five walks in the inning and his defense committed an error behind him resulting in half the runs being handed to the Mustangs.
The Tigers continue their struggles in conference play down the stretch dropping to 1-17 in the GPAC and 4-26 overall. The Mustangs on the other hand improved to 29-10 overall and tied for a GPAC best 15 wins.
