MITCHELL, S.D. – Jason Spicer (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Ty Hoglund (Dell Rapids, S.D.) led the No. 13 Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team over the Briar Cliff University Chargers (14-6, 5-4 GPAC) 87-66 on Wednesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers (16-5, 7-2 GPAC) grabbed their first lead of the game after a Spicer layup with 14:06 to play in the first half and it certainly wouldn't be Spicer's last. Freshman sensation Ty Hoglund tallied eight points in 47 seconds of play early in the first half, but the second half was key for the young Tiger. Later in the half, Aaron Ahmadu (Houston, Texas) gave DWU an eight-point cushion on a last second layup that sank as the buzzer sounded.
Heading into the second half, the Tiger offense began to fire on all cylinders when Trae Vandeberg (Madison, S.D.) connected on a long range 3-pointer, putting the Tigers up 48-39. For nearly an eight-minute span, the DWU offense was led by Hoglund and Spicer. Hoglund tallied shots from beyond the arc and off the glass, while Spicer did most of his damage in the paint. Ultimately, back-to-back layups from senior Tate Martin (Mitchel, S.D.) put the Tigers in the driver's seat.
Hoglund finished with a career-high 29 points and six rebounds, while Spicer tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, just shy of a triple-double. Vandeberg pitched in 14 points, while Martin had eight points and 11 assists. The Tigers shot 52 percent from the field, 43 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line.
