TIGERS REGISTER SEVERAL ALL-CONFERENCE FINISHES AT GPAC INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
CRETE, Neb. – Looking to maintain its stride headed into postseason competition, the Dakota Wesleyan University track and field program registered both an NAIA 'B' standard and new program record along with several All-GPAC performances at the 2022 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) indoor track and field championships on Saturday from Fuhrer Fieldhouse in Crete, Neb. Senior jumper Lia Guigui hit the NAIA 'B' standard in the women's high jump while Tiger sophomore Katlyn Briggs extended the DWU program record in the weight throw event.
CRETE, Neb. – Looking to maintain its stride headed into postseason competition, the Dakota Wesleyan University track and field program registered both an NAIA 'B' standard and new program record along with several All-GPAC performances at the 2022 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) indoor track and field championships on Saturday from Fuhrer Fieldhouse in Crete, Neb. Senior jumper Lia Guigui hit the NAIA 'B' standard in the women's high jump while Tiger sophomore Katlyn Briggs extended the DWU program record in the weight throw event.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Guigui, the Rapid City, S.D., native began the day in the high jump event where she cleared a height of 1.65 meters (5-5) good enough for the NAIA standard and a runner-up performance. The jumps specialist attempted three quality jumps at 1.68 meters, though punched her ticket to the NAIA indoor track and field championships. Guigui concluded the championship meet with a sixth-place performance in the long jump standings after a leap of 17-8.25.
Meanwhile, Briggs who already maintains both an NAIA standard and the Dakota Wesleyan program record in the weight throw, registered a fourth-place finish in the field. She dialed a toss of 54-10.25 on her fourth toss of the day while setting a new weight throw record. Also competing in the throwing ring, fellow NAIA qualifier Morgan Taft finished 10th in the event with a distance of 49-5.5.
Lila Gronseth and Ashtyn Evans rounded out the DWU women's field events in their respective events. Gronseth placed 13th in the shot put while Evans hit a mark of 32-5.5 in the triple jump. The lady Tiger's 4x400 meter-relay team of Taylor Pourier, Avany Long, Annika Vermeulen and Evans finished the day in seventh concluding the day for the Dakota Wesleyan women's squad.
On the DWU men's side, Caden Milmine continued his strong senior campaign with a top-3 finish in the shot. The Buffalo, Wyo., native tallied a distance of 52-6.5 on his third attempt of the day while the NAIA qualifier registered a third-place performance in the event. Tiger freshman Ryley Johansen also pieced together a solid championship performance in the field events. The jump specialists from Mitchell earned an eighth-place finish in the high jump thanks to a leap of 6-3.25.
