SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team got back to its winning ways on Thursday, taking a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. DWU took the first game 2-1 and the final game 5-1.
Despite the Chargers leading for most of game one, senior Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah) had different ideas as she recorded a home run in the top of the seventh inning to put DWU in the driver's seat.
Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) gave it all she had on the mound for the Tigers, including two hits at the plate. In the pitcher's circle, she tossed seven innings, allowing an earned run off seven hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.) also added two hits for DWU.
In the finale, a three-run first inning, followed by insurance runs in the third and fourth innings was enough for senior Lorissa Loeepky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) to keep the Chargers off the scoreboard.
Loeppky went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and walk, while pitching seven innings, allowing an earned run off seven hits, while striking out two and walking one. Paige Kinley (Worthington, Minn.) was also 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and a triple.
The Tigers (14-27, 4-6 GPAC) host Northwestern College for a GPAC doubleheader at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
