Tigers split weekend series with Mustangs
ABERDEEN, S.D. – After being forced to move the weekend series with Morningside College to the Presentation College Dome, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split the series. Morningside won the first game 13-1, as DWU took the second game 3-2 Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – After being forced to move the weekend series with Morningside College to the Presentation College Dome, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split the series. Morningside won the first game 13-1, as DWU took the second game 3-2 Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.
In the first game of the day, the Mustangs (9-6, 4-2 GPAC) took an early 4-0 lead after tallying four runs in the second inning. Two frames later, Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.) doubled down the right-field line to bring Andriana Sprakel (Yankton, S.D.) home for the lone run of the game.
However, Morningside added eight runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Tigers (7-19, 2-4 GPAC) in the opening game of the weekend.
Severance finished 1-for-2 with a run batted in, as Sprakel finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Alyson VanderPol (Mitchell, S.D.) pitched five and two-third innings as she struck out a batter and allowed 10 earned runs.
In the second game, the Mustangs took another early lead, this time with a run in the second inning to hold a 1-0 lead.
But, DWU took its' first lead of the day following a VanderPol two-run double. Moments later, Amber Budmark (Sacramento, Calif.) crossed home plate following a Morningside error as the Tigers held a 3-1 advantage.
The Mustangs attempted a comeback as they notched a run in the sixth frame. However, the Tigers took the second game of the day thanks to strong fielding.
VanderPol led the Tigers at the plate as she went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, as Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) tallied the other RBI. Sprakel went 1-for-3 with a run, while Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) finished 1-for-2 with a run. Haage went the distance as she picked up the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters and allowing eight hits.
The Tigers return to action against Briar Cliff University for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
