Recap
DWU came out strong in set one with their most efficient set at a .245 attack percentage while holding the Comets to just a .087. Ady Dwight and Logan Bly were going back and forth on the offensive attack with Dwight collecting six and Bly's four. The first points of the match were a back-and-forth contest that had DWU jump to a 5-2 lead, but only to surrender it and face a two-point deficit at 9-7. Tigers responded with five straight points after the Comet run to regain a 12-9 lead and draw a MSU timeout. During the run DWU got kills from Bly, Abigail Brunsing, and Emily Dale. The timeout proved beneficial for the Comets as they responded to knot the score up at 12 thanks to two Tiger attack errors. Both squads went point for point leaving it tied at 15. That would be all for Mayville in the set as the Tigers had enough of messing around and closed the Comets out on a 10-0 run for a 25-15 set one win. Carlee Laubach was at the service line during the whole run, doing a great job of mixing up her serves and making it tough on the serve receive, resulting in bad first passes and making it tough for MSU to set up their offense.
Set two saw Mayville grab an early lead, a lead they held onto through the first quarter of the match at 10-8. The Comets did a good job of defending Dwight, forcing Hybertson to go to other options. However, you can't keep Dwight and company at bay for too long as the Tigers, like they have all season, stayed calm and confident even when they are down and responded with a big 9-2 run to grab a 17-12 lead. Again, it was Laubach finding herself at the service line for a majority of the run, continuing to put the Comets in tough spots with her serves. Mayville answered back and erased the DWU five-point lead to tie it at 18. Like in set one though this would be it for the Comets in the scoring department with DWU closing them out on a 7-0 run to win set two 25-18. It was Tyler this time at the service line who provided the spark with two aces during the run.
The Tigers trailed for most of set three and even faced set at 24-21 late in the set, drawing a timeout from head coach Lindsay Wilber. The resilient Tigers out of the timeout got a huge kill from Bly and then assisted blocks from Hybertson and Dwight, making it 24-23 and drawing a MSU timeout. Still facing set point and Callie Slagter at the service line, most would think Slagter would go with the safe approach and get it over the net, but Slagter had other plans with her aggressive serve just clearing the net and falling for an ace to tie it at 24 all. After both teams traded points for a 25-25 score, Hybertson went to their All-American in Dwight to give them match point. Mayville would record an attack error the following point to give DWU a 27-25 set three win and 3-0 straight set match win.
