DWU opens season with three golfers finishing inside top-10
YANKTON, S.D. – With two teams competing, the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s golf team opened the 2019 season with an impressive start, as three golfers placed inside the top-10. As a team, DWU took third and fifth place out of 14 teams at the Mount Marty Fall Invite on Monday and Tuesday in Yankton, S.D.
YANKTON, S.D. – With two teams competing, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's golf team opened the 2019 season with an impressive start, as three golfers placed inside the top-10. As a team, DWU took third and fifth place out of 14 teams at the Mount Marty Fall Invite on Monday and Tuesday in Yankton, S.D.
Highlighting the two-day tournament was freshman Devan Weelborg (Bryant, S.D.) as he led the Tigers, tying for seventh place. He carded a 74 on day one and a 78 on day two.
Not far behind was Justice Morrison (Norris, S.D.) who carded a two-day total of 153 as he finished in ninth place. Tony Hayes (Sioux Falls, S.D.) tied for 10th place after recording an 80 on the opening day and a 74 on day two.
Finishing just outside of the top-10 was sophomore Bennet Lundy (Aberdeen, S.D.) who took 14th after a total of 158 through two days. Junior Cade Carpenter (Mitchell, S.D.) tied for 21st place after carding an 80 on both days, while Nolan Wiegel (Huron, S.D.) rounded out the varsity squad tied for 27th.
Freshman Payton Phares (Rapid City, S.D.) took 23rd in his first collegiate tournament with a two-day total of 161. Other golfers who competed were Jayden Engels (Watertown, S.D.), Nate Hohn (Parkston, S.D.), Jamie McGowan (White River, S.D.), Wyatt Voelker (Newcastle, Wyo.) and Gavin Zomer (Corsica, S.D.).
The men's golf team hits the links again at the Blue River Classic on Tuesday and Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb.
