SAINT CLOUD, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped two to Saint Cloud State University on the opening weekend of the season Saturday in Saint Cloud, Minn.
The Tigers seemed on the verge of their first win of the season, leading the Huskies 4-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh in game one. SCSU rallied with three to push the game to extra innings and the home team eventually found the winning run in the 10th inning, topping DWU 5-4.
In game two, SCSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Tigers answered with three in the top of the fifth inning to get back in the game. The Huskies responded quickly with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to end the game 11-3 in five.
Freshman pitcher Hallie Misiaszek (Mitchell, S.D.) came within an out of winning her debut in game one, but came up short. She went eight innings, allowing four earned runs, while striking out four. Fellow freshman pitcher Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was charged with the loss after entering the game in the 10th.
Senior catcher Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and senior Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) each finished with three hits, while freshman Savannah Ahumada (Turlock, Calif.) picked up a pair of RBIs.
In game two, Haage (0-2) took a second loss on the day, allowing five earned runs in four innings of work. Ahumada led the DWU offense with a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
DWU (0-4) is off for two weeks until six games at an event hosted by Presentation College Feb. 20-21 in Aberdeen, S.D.
