DWU softball picks up first win at Presentation

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan softball team competed in the Dome Tournament hosted by Presentation College going 1-2 on the day in Aberdeen, S.D.
In game one, the Tigers picked up their first victory of the season, backed by a 4-for-4 performance including three doubles from junior Nicole Stark (San Ramon, Calif.).
The Tigers drew first blood in the bottom of the first, but Waldorf College responded with two runs in the top of the second. DWU put up a four spot in the bottom of the third and added six more runs in the top of the sixth. Seniors Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Vanessa Mendez (Monterey Park, Calif.) chipped in two hits apiece. Mendez also knocked in four, while senior Meghan Bovee (San Diego, Calif.) tallied three RBIs, while going 1-for-3 on the game.
Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) picked up her first win on the mound in relief, tossing four and two thirds innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four batters.
In game two, DWU scored two runs in the first, but Valley City State University responded, putting up nine runs in the top of the third. The Tigers chipped away by adding four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings topped DWU 10-8.
The Tigers relied on the bats of freshmen Savannah Ahumada (Turlock, Calif.), Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Hallie Misiaszek (Mitchell, S.D.) in game two. Ahumada went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run, while Haage went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple and a home run. Local product Misiaszek blasted two home runs, while picking up two RBIs.
In the final game of the afternoon, the Tigers held a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Jamestown University answered with three runs taking game three by the final of 5-3.
Ahumada went 2-for-2 in game three, picking up a triple and two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Stark added a double and an RBI in the loss.
Misiaszek threw six innings allowing five runs on seven hits, while striking out seven.
The Tigers (1-6) are back in action at the Dome Tournament taking on Waldorf College at 9 a.m. Sunday in Aberdeen.
