MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team's bats were quieted by Great Plains Athletic Conference leading Morningside College in a doubleheader Thursday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers scored two early, but were shut down the rest of the way in a 9-2 loss in game one, while the No. 14 Mustangs broke out late to pull away for a 5-1 win in the finale. The losses drop DWU to 23-15 overall and 6-4 in the GPAC.
DWU freshman Savannah Ahumada (Turlock, Calif.) drove in her team leading 36th run with a first-inning triple in game one and later scored on an RBI single from freshman Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.). The Tigers were limited to just three hits the rest of the way as Morningside (27-5, 8-0 GPAC) built to its lead throughout.
Freshman pitcher Hallie Misiaszek (Mitchell, S.D.) took the loss in game one, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits, while walking four and striking out two. Misiaszek is 8-4 this season.
The teams battled in a low-scoring game in the finale, as the score was tied at one through four innings. DWU got its lone run in the third inning on a RBI single from freshman Karly Severance (Las Vegas, Nev.). After taking a one-run lead in the fifth, Morningside got three insurance runs in the seventh to put the game away as DWU left nine runners on base in the loss.
Haage was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits, while walking two and striking out four. She is 10-5 this season.
The Tigers continue GPAC play against Hastings College at 1 p.m. Saturday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
