MESA, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team continued to feel right at home in Arizona with two more wins Tuesday in Mesa, Ariz., following a 9-1 record in 10 games in Tucson.
The Tigers headed to Benedictine University at Mesa for a doubleheader. DWU rode the arm of freshman starting pitcher Hallie Misiaszek (Mitchell, S.D.) who made a single Tiger run in the first inning stand up for the 1-0 win in the opener. In the finale, timely hitting boosted DWU to a 5-2 victory.
DWU has won 13 of its last 14 games and is 15-9 on the season with two more games to play in Arizona before returning home to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play.
Misiaszek (4-1) was untouchable, allowing just a lone single in the fourth inning. She scattered three walks and struck out nine batters en route to the win. The only offense needed came off the bat of freshman shortstop Savannah Ahumada (Turlock, Calif.), who hit her fifth home run of the season in the opening inning.
DWU had one run on six hits and one error in the win.
In the finale, freshman pitcher Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up her team-best sixth win of the season. The decision is the sixth straight win for Haage (6-3). She tossed all seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out seven.
Senior Vanessa Mendez (Monterey, Calif.) and junior Kelly Taylor (Dublin, Calif.) each led the DWU offense with two hits, including a double and an RBI. The Tigers had five runs on 10 hits and one error in game two.
The Tigers close their spring break trip with a doubleheader against Arizona Christian University at 11 a.m. Friday in Phoenix, Ariz.
