ABERDEEN, S.D. – Despite never trailing in two games, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team had a pair of battles on its hands in a doubleheader with Presentation College Thursday in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Tigers scored six runs late to top the Saints 6-1 in the opener, while freshman pitcher Sierra Haage (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made a single DWU run in the first inning stand up for a 1-0 win in the finale. The sweep pushes DWU to 19-11 overall, giving the team the second most wins in school history, despite 24 games left in the regular season. Since starting the season 2-8, the Tigers are 17-3 in their last 20 games.
In game one, the score remained scoreless until the sixth when DWU broke out. Haage got the Tigers on the board with an RBI on a fielder's choice, while freshman Andriana Sprakel hit a sacrifice fly to center to put DWU up 2-0. The Saints got one back in the bottom of the inning, but DWU put the game away with four in the seventh, including a two-run home run off the bat of senior Vanessa Mendez (Monterey Park, Calif.), her second of the season.
The scoring outburst was more than enough for freshman starter Hallie Misiaszek (Mitchell, S.D.). She went all seven innings, allowing one run on two hits, while walking three and striking out two. Misiaszek is now 6-2 on the season with a 2.24 ERA. The Tigers finished with six runs on nine hits with two errors.
Game two started with DWU getting on the board right away with Haage doubling home a run in the first. The Tigers were shut down the rest of the way, but Haage was not phased and recorded her eighth win and third shutout of the season. Haage scattered seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
Senior Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) was the lone Tiger with two hits and scored the winning run in the first inning, while adding a pair of stolen bases. DWU finished with one run on five hits and no errors.
The Tigers return to Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Doane College at 2 p.m. Saturday in Crete, Neb.
