MITCHELL, S.D. – The 2016 spring golf season is making the turn and the Dakota Wesleyan University squads are rounding into form at the right time as the men and women each had strong performances in multiple events last week.
The Tiger women were led to a second-place showing at the Buena Vista Invitational Sunday in Storm Lake, Iowa led by tournament medalist Lauren Fitts (Brookings, S.D.), while the team added a third-place finish at Viking Spring Classic earlier in the week in Ankeny, Iowa.
The men won the annual TigBro Match with Hastings College Saturday and took their first tournament title of the year at the Wild West Invite Sunday in Gothenburg, Neb., shooting a DWU record low round of 277. The Tiger men were led to the victory by junior Thomas Hogg (Aberdeen, S.D.).
For their efforts, Fitts and Hogg have been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Golfers of the Week, it was announced by the league Tuesday. The sweep is the first for DWU this season. For Fitts, the weekly honor is the 11th of her career.
Fitts won the individual title at Buena Vista, her first individual title since winning five straight events in the fall season. The senior charged up the leaderboard on day two with a 74 to earn a spot in a three-golfer playoff, which she won on the second hole. Fitts added a fifth-place finish at the Viking Spring Classic earlier in the week.
Hogg played a large part in the Tiger men setting a new DWU record score for a team in 18 holes. Both Hogg and teammate Anthony Husher (Winner, S.D.) shot a 66 in the Wild West Invite, a one-round event. The score for both golfers was one shot back of the DWU record for an individual single round and earned the pair a share of the individual title at the event. Hogg added a sixth-place finish at the BCU Mini Tour Stop earlier in the week, including a 68 in the second round, while also playing a large role in Tigers holding on to the TigBro trophy on Saturday.
The DWU men continue play at the Midland Invite Saturday in Oakland, Neb., while the women head to the Kaitlyn Erickson Invitational Thursday in Lincoln, Neb.
