MITCHELL, S.D. – After trailing 4-0 in the opening set, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team rallied and never looked back, defeating the College of Saint Mary in a Great Plains Athletic Conference battle Friday at the Christen Family Athletic Center.
Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23.
Two errors by the Tigers (13-11, 3-9 GPAC) put themselves in an early 4-0 hole. It didn't take DWU long to recover as Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) connected on an attack for the kill to tie the game, 8-8. The Tigers took control of the first set from that point, taking the victory.
DWU handled the second set as they led 20-15. CSM gave the Tigers a scare as they closed within two points, but DWU closed out the set with a Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) kill.
The Flames (12-14, 2-9 GPAC) got back into the game as they took the third set. It looked as if the Tigers would cruise to victory in the fourth set, but CSM fought back within two points late. However, DWU would walk away victorious on the night in front of a packed crowd at the Christen Family Athletic Center.
Heeg finished the night with a career-high 17 kills, as Chaydon Metzger (Larchwood, Iowa) tied a career-high with seven kills. Frick notched 18 kills and 14 digs, while Mallory Cooper (Orchard, Neb.) tallied 18 digs and Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) chipped in 43 assists and 16 digs. The Tigers collected 11 blocks on the night compared to six by the Flames.
DWU hits the road for a six-game road stand beginning with a match at Presentation College at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Aberdeen, S.D.
