DWU drops pair of matchups at PC Dome Classic
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball squad squared off against Valley City State University and Dordt University in the second day of the PC Dome Classic. DWU dropped both contests on Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball squad squared off against Valley City State University and Dordt University in the second day of the PC Dome Classic. DWU dropped both contests on Saturday in Aberdeen, S.D.
The opening game of the day pitted the Tigers (1-3) against VCSU, as DWU lost 5-1. It was DWU that struck first as Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit a sacrifice fly aND Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) came home to score.
In the second frame, Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) faced three batters and struck out two. She also struck out four of the first six batters she faced.
After a scoreless few innings, the Vikings took a 2-1 lead after a pair of runs crossed home plate in the top of the fourth inning. One frame later, VCSU added three insurance runs as it held a 5-1 advantage after five innings.
The Tigers attempted a late rally but fell short without adding another run.
In the second contest of the day, DWU squared off against conference foe Dordt in a non-conference tilt and dropped the game 3-2.
The game began similarly to the first as DWU took an early 1-0 lead. After Gabel hit a single in the first inning, Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) smacked an RBI double to right field.
However, the lead did not last long as the Defenders notched a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, DWU tied the game. After a Daffern single to center field, Destinee Nelson (Henry, S.D.) came in to pinch run for her. Nelson got right to work as she stole second base to put her into scoring position. One batter later, Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) nailed a double to deep left field as Nelson crossed home plate to tie the game.
The Tigers held off a Defender rally until the bottom of the fifth frame. Dordt hit an RBI double to left field in a run that turned out to be the go-ahead run.
Burke finished 2-for-7 with a run, while Daffern finished 1-for-4 at the plate, while pitching 4.2 innings and striking out four batters.
DWU returns to Aberdeen for a doubleheader against Presentation College at 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursday.
