SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Taking on the 16th-ranked team in the NAIA, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team squared off against Morningside College for its third-straight road doubleheader in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. DWU dropped the two games on Sunday in Sioux City, Iowa.
In the first game, the Mustangs (24-3, 2-0 GPAC) took care of DWU in the top of the opening frame as they put up four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers (8-14, 0-6 GPAC) got one run back in the top of the second as Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) grounded out to first base, but brought a run home to get on the scoreboard.
However, Morningside tallied two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to push its lead to 6-1. The Tigers struggled to get the bats going as they recorded just two hits through the final four innings as they dropped the opening game by a score of 7-1.
Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Haley Linke (Mitchell, S.D.) each went 1-for-3 at the plate, as Nebel tallied the lone RBI in the game. Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) pitched six frames and struck out three batters on the bump.
The second game began quickly for the Mustangs as they tacked on seven runs through the first two innings. Neither team scored again until DWU did in the top of the fifth frame when Nora Nelson (Rapid City, S.D.) and Nebel each connected on RBI singles to center field to pull the Tigers within five runs.
But Morningside added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the score ended with an 8-2 victory in the favor of the Mustangs.
Nelson and Nebel each finished 1-for-3 with a run batted in, while McElveny went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Both McElveny and Gabel tallied a double, while Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) struck out three batters in 3.1 innings of work.
The Tigers are slated to come home for the first time this year as they host Northwestern College at 3 and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 from Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
