MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team fell short versus University of Jamestown on Tuesday evening in its final Great Plains Athletic Conference road trip of the season in Jamestown, N.D.
Dakota Wesleyan dropped the first game of the doubleheader 5-1 and was held scoreless in game two by a score of 9-0.
DWU strung together a pair of hits in the first inning of game one, however, the Tigers (9-23, 1-15 GPAC) were unable to plate across any runs. Haley Linke (Mitchell, S.D.) recorded a one-out single to right field and Alyssa Garcia (La Verne, Calif.) reached via a single two batters later. Despite the missed opportunity offensively, the Dakota Wesleyan defense held Jamestown in check over the next two innings and the game remained scoreless heading into the top of the third frame.
The Tigers plated the first run of the game in the top of the third innings as the DWU batters came to the plate a second time. Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) began the rally with a single to shallow center followed by a pair of successful bunt attempts by Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D) and Linke. Garcia, who finished with a pair of hits, gave DWU the early 1-0 lead with a single to centerfield.
Though, the Jimmies (31-11, 14-6) responded in the bottom half of the third frame with four runs on three hits. A double and a pair of singles gave UJ the 4-1 lead at the end of the third frame. Garcia executed a routine pop-fly to record the final out of the inning which helped Dakota Wesleyan escape the jam.
Jamestown added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 5-1 and held on for the four-run victory in game one. DWU secured six hits as Linke finished 2-of-4 from the plate while Garcia recorded the lone RBI for the Tigers.
The second game saw the Jimmies race out to a 3-0 lead at the conclusion of the first inning of game two. UJ plated three runs on two hits to take the early lead before a groundout completed by Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) stunted the Jamestown momentum.
Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) produced the first hit of the game for DWU with one out in the top of the second inning. Dakota Wesleyan notched two more baserunners in the top of the fourth frame thanks to a lead-off single by Reagan Grossi (Vail, Ariz.) and an infield hit by McElveny. Despite the momentum at the plate, the Blue and Gray were unable to capitalize and trailed 9-0 at the end of the fourth inning.
Down to its final three outs, Dakota Wesleyan attempted a late rally which fell short. Regardless of a lead-off single by Linke, the Tigers were recorded in order and UJ held on for the 9-0 victory and the doubleheader sweep.
DWU returns home versus (RV) Midland University at 1 p.m. from Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
