STERLING, Kan. – It took extra innings and a comeback for the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team on Tuesday, but DWU came away with a pair of wins against Sterling College in non-conference action in Sterling Kan.
The first game saw the Tigers (7-5) jump out to an early 2-0 lead after Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) brought a run home on a single, while she also scored a few moments later after a Sterling error.
The Warriors (2-10) cut the DWU lead in half as the game entered the second frame. In the top of the second the Tigers tallied three runs due to a handful of Sterling errors. One inning later, DWU added another three runs thanks to impressive base stealing. After a pair of Tigers came home, Haley Linke (Mitchell, S.D.) brought Monique Gomez (Santa Maria, Calif.) across home plate after an RBI single to right field.
However, the Warriors came storming back after a run in the third inning and six runs in the fourth frame to tie the game. After the final three frames were scoreless the contest headed to extra innings. Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) helped the Tigers take a 9-8 lead after scoring first. Later in the same inning Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to bring Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) home to give DWU a 10-8 advantage.
The Tigers put away Sterling in the bottom half of the frame after an impressive 9-2 double play that caught a runner at home plate.
Garcia finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Gabel and Linke each finished 1-for-5 with a run batted in. Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) stole four bases and pitched three innings and struck out four batters on the mound.
In the second game, the Tigers came from behind as they trailed 2-0 after two innings. However, Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) hit an RBI single to right field to cut the deficit in half.
In the top of the fifth inning the Tigers took the lead after another Nebel RBI single kickstarted the offense. Later in the same inning Gabel smacked a two-run single to left field to give DWU a 4-2 advantage.
Despite the Warriors tying the game in the sixth frame, DWU had one more surge left. Garcia grounded out to second base, but Burke scored on the play to return the lead to DWU. The Tigers held off the Warriors in the bottom half of the frame to secure the sweep.
Nebel finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, as Gabel went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Burke, Nebel and Thomason combined for four stolen bases in the game, while Kyllie Ramirez (Revillo, S.D.) picked up the win on the mound.
