MITCHELL, S.D.– The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team completed its 2021 season with a pair of matchups against (RV) Concordia University. DWU fell in the Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 9-0 on Sunday from Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
The Bulldogs (29-9, 15-7 GPAC) were hot early as they tallied seven runs in the opening two innings. After a lead-off triple opened the game, Concordia scored three runs in the top of the first, while tallying a pair of RBI doubles in the second frame to highlight the scoring.
The Tigers (10-28, 2-20 GPAC) struggled to get their bats going as they did not record a hit until the fourth inning when senior Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) singled to shallow right field to reach base. However, Concordia made sure no runs scored as the Tigers were held without a run in the frame.
The Bulldogs notched one run in the top of the sixth and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame to end the opening game in six innings.
Nebel and Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) each finished 1-for-3, while Lena McCoy (Estherville, Iowa) went 1-for-2 at the plate.
The second game began similarly as the Bulldogs opened with a five-run first inning to take a commanding lead. Concordia began the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field followed by an RBI double moments later to aid the Bulldogs in their scoring.
Nebel led off the bottom of the inning with a single to left field. Moments later she stole second base, but couldn't get any farther as the inning came to a close without the Tigers reaching home.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) came to the plate to lead off for the Tigers. In her last at-bat in a Tiger uniform, she recorded a single. But, the following three batters were unable to reach base as Concordia ended the game in five innings.
Nebel and Gabel each finished 1-for-1 at the plate to record the two lone hits in the game for the Tigers.
DWU finishes the 2021 season with an overall record of 10-28 and graduates three seniors.
