Tigers sweep Saints with a pair of convincing wins
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team earned a pair of convincing wins outscoring Presentation College 30-10 between the two games on Thursday from the PC Dome in Aberdeen, S.D.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team earned a pair of convincing wins outscoring Presentation College 30-10 between the two games on Thursday from the PC Dome in Aberdeen, S.D.
The opening game of the day saw Dakota Wesleyan jump out to a 3-0 lead at the end of the top half of the first inning. A double by Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) knocked in Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) as DWU sent eight batters to the plate. Though, Presentation responded in the bottom half of the inning with its only run of the game and the score sat 3-1 at the start of the second frame.
The Tigers (3-3) recorded three hits and four runs in the second frame as Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) kicked off the inning with a single. Both Monique Gomez (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Gabel reached in order to load the bases and Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) produced a grand slam. Garcia, who led the Tigers with a game-high eight RBIs, finished 3-of-3 at the plate.
After a scoreless third inning, DWU tallied nine more runs in the final two innings on 12 hits. Haley Linke (Mitchell, S.D.) doubled to open the fourth frame followed by a single off the bat of Gabel, who finished with four runs scored on three hits and one walk. The Blue and Gray carried a 10-run lead entering the final frame.
Dakota Wesleyan produced a game-high five runs in the final frame as Garcia secured her second home run of the game. The 5-foot-2 outfielder sent the first pitch of the at-bat over the fence and brought home two more runs. A Nora Nelson (Rapid City, S.D.) single rounded out the scoring for the Tigers in the contest.
After a pair of Saints (1-7) reached base in the final half of the fifth, the DWU defense closed out the game as the Tigers earned a 16-1 victory
Burke picked up the win in the circle as she recorded five strikeouts and gave up just one earned run in five innings. Garcia led Dakota Wesleyan with a pair of home runs on three hits as five Tigers recorded two or more hits.
In the second game, Dakota Wesleyan found itself tied with the Saints 2-2 at the end of the second frame. Devany Farris (Cheyenne, Wyo.) tripled with one out in the third and later scored off a single by McElveny. Later in the inning, Linke tallied a single which drove in the second run of the frame.
A three-run home run by McElveny gave the Tigers a brief 5-2 lead in the middle of the third inning. Reagan Grossi (Vail, Ariz.) kicked off the fifth frame with a single as DWU scored three runs on a pair of hits.
With the game tied at the top of the seventh frame, Dakota Wesleyan produced five runs on five hits and a pair of Saint errors. Gabel, who finished with two hits in the game, hit a two-run homerun to spark the Tiger offense. Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) denied any comeback by the Saints in the final inning as she earned the save and preserved the 14-9 victory.
Farris recorded a pair of strikeouts in five innings pitched while McElveny led the Tigers with four RBIs on three hits. Dakota Wesleyan finished with 14 hits and drew four walks on 39 plate appearances.
DWU returns to action with a pair of games versus Dakota State University and Dickinson State University as part of the PC Dome Classic at noon and 4 p.m. today from the PC Dome in Aberdeen.
