ABERDEEN, S.D. – Opening the second weekend of the Presentation College Dome Classic, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team defeated Dakota State University but fell to (RV) Dickinson State University Friday in Aberdeen, S.D.
In the first game of the day, DWU defeated DSU in comeback fashion, 8-7.
After the Tigers went through the first three batters of the Trojan lineup, DWU went right to work at the plate. Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) hit an RBI double to left field, followed by an Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) RBI single a few batters later. Reagan Grossi (Vail, Ariz.) capped off the scoring with an RBI single later in the opening frame to give DWU a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Trojans tied the game in the top of the third frame. However, DWU regained the advantage after an Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) solo homerun.
DSU retook the lead one frame later after a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead. DWU added one run in the bottom half of the frame but needed to score three runs in the last inning to complete the comeback.
The Tigers did just that as Gabel and Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) got on base and stole bases until they were in scoring position. Garcia came to the plate and brought Burke home to give the Tigers a chance.
A few batters later, Thomason nailed a single to deep right field as she brought two runners home to complete the comeback.
The second game did not go in the favor of DWU as (RV) Dickinson State downed the Tigers 15-4.
The Blue Hawks wasted no time getting to work as they held an 11-0 lead after the first two innings. However, Gabel helped the Tigers gain some life in the third inning. With the bases loaded, she hit a three-run double to deep right field.
Despite the attempt of coming back, DWU was unable to get any closer as Dickinson State came away with the win.
Thomason finished with three RBIs on the day, while Gabel went 3-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Kyllie Ramirez (Revillo, S.D.) picked up the win as she pitched 3.2 innings.
The Tigers get back to work as they take on Mayville state University and Valley City State University at 2 and 4 p.m. tomorrow in Aberdeen, S.D.
