SIOUX CITY, Iowa – After postponing the games two days, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team took on Briar Cliff University for a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader. DWU dropped the first game in extra innings by a score of 3-2 and fell in the second game of the day in a 7-4 bout on Friday in Sioux City, Iowa.
The first game of the day began as a defensive battle as neither team scored a run through the first four innings of work. However, the Chargers (13-11, 2-2 GPAC) broke the scoreless contest in the bottom of the fifth frame to take a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the seventh with one chance to tie the game, the Tigers (8-12, 0-4 GPAC) did just that. Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) knocked an RBI single up the middle to bring Katelyn Farris (Converse, Texas) home to tie the game.
After BCU came up blank in the bottom half of the frame, the two teams went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Adrianna Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) nailed an RBI double to deep right-center field to bring a run home to take a 2-1 lead.
Just when it looked as if DWU would seal the comeback, the Chargers notched a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to steal the game from the Tigers.
McElveny finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, as Thomason went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) was tagged with the loss as she pitched 2.2 innings and struck out a pair of batters.
Game two began in the favor of the Chargers as they quickly took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second after a solo homerun and an error later in the same inning.
The Tigers cut into the deficit two innings later as they tacked on three runs thanks to a two-run double by Reagan Nebel (Hayti, S.D.) highlighted the frame.
After BCU extended its lead to two runs in the bottom half of the frame, DWU once again pulled within a run after a Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) single brought Thomason home.
However, the Chargers held off any more runs by DWU and added a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 7-4 defeat of the Tigers.
Nebel led the charge as she finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Gabel went 3-for-3 with a run batted in, a run scored and a double. Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) picked up the loss after 5.1 innings pitched and one strikeout.
