SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – In their first Great Plains Athletic Conference games of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a pair of games to Dordt University. DWU lost the first game 6-1 and fell in the second contest 10-2 on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
After the Defenders (13-11, 2-0 GPAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, DWU tied the game in the top of the second frame after Reagan Grossi (Vail, Ariz.) stole home.
After a scoreless third inning, Dordt notched a pair of runs in the fourth frame to take a 3-1 advantage and added three runs over the next two innings to hold a 6-1 lead. The Tigers (8-10, 0-2 GPAC) were unable to tack on another run as they fell in the opening game of the day.
Grossi finished with a run scored and two hits, as Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) and Haley Linke (Mitchell, S.D.) each finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Meghan Daffern (Tehachapi, Calif.) was tabbed with the loss after pitching four innings and striking out three batters.
The second game saw the Tigers jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each recorded an RBI.
However, Dordt didn't allow the Tigers to hold the lead long as they tied the game in the bottom of the second. DWU struggled from the plate throughout the remainder of the second game, as the Defenders added eight runs to defeat DWU in the second game of the day.
Burke pitched five frames and struck out a batter, while McElveny and Gabel finished 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece.
The Tigers take on Briar Cliff University for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
