MITCHELL, S.D.– The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team squared off against Mount Marty University for a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader and their first home games of the 2021 season. DWU fell in the first game, 10-4 but responded with an 11-3 victory in game two on Saturday at Dr. McWhirter Field in Mitchell.
The Lancers (15-10, 6-4 GPAC) got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. However, DWU responded with a run in the bottom of the frame as Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) connected on an RBI double.
In the top of the third, Mount Marty regained the lead, recording a pair of runs and adding three runs in the top of the fourth frame. Trailing 6-1, the Tigers (9-15, 1-7 GPAC) rallied to within two runs of the Lancers thanks to a three-run double by Allison McElveny (Chula Vista, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth inning.
But Mount Marty tallied four runs over the final two innings to hold on for a 10-4 victory in game one.
McElveny led the way at the plate as she finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs, as Garcia went 3-for-4 with a run batted in. Freshman Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) was handed the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, striking out four batters.
The Tigers got off to a hot start to the second game, holding a 2-0 lead after recording a pair of runs in the first frame. After the Lancers tied the game in the top of the third, McElveny singled to center field, bringing home a run to regain a 3-2 advantage.
After both teams tacked on a run in the fifth inning, the Tigers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) kicked off the inning with a two-run double, followed by a Monique Gomez (Santa Maria, Calif.) RBI single. Nora Nelson (Rapid City, S.D.) joined the slugfest as she recorded an RBI after a single to center field, as DWU cruised to victory.
Gabel finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in and a double, as Nelson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Kyllie Ramirez (Revillo, S.D.) claimed the win on the mound after pitching six innings, striking out two batters.
