ABERDEEN, S.D. – After competing in the Presentation College Dome Classic over the past two weekends, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team finished the classic with a pair of games today against Mayville State University and Valley City State University.
In the first game of the day, DWU downed MSU 10-5. Alyssa Burke (Rapid City, S.D.) kicked things off with a single, followed by a stolen base. Stephanie Gabel (Sioux Falls, S.D.) did not waste any time putting the Tigers (5-5) on the board as she nailed a two-run homerun over the left-field fence. However, the Comets tied the game in the bottom half of the frame as the score remained tied 2-2 after on inning.
After a scoreless second frame, Alyssa Garcia (L.A. Verne, Calif.) smacked a single to get on base. After DWU added a run off a MSU error, Garcia came home after a loaded-bases walk. After another Tiger scored on a bases-loaded walk, Katelyn Farris (Converse, Texas) hit an RBI single to left field to extend the lead. DWU added five runs in total through the third inning to take a 7-2 lead.
After the Comets pulled within three runs, DWU tallied three more runs over the final two innings to secure the victory.
Burke finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, while she pitched all seven innings and struck out nine batters. Gabel went 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, while Adriana Thomason (Las Vegas, Nev.) added a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.
The Tigers dropped the second and final game of the weekend in a 14-0 game against VCSU. It was 11 runs in the third inning that helped the Vikings take an early lead. Three more runs in the fifth frame secured the victory over DWU.
The Tigers mustered just three hits in the game, while Devany Farris (Cheyenne, Wyo.) recorded three strikeouts on the mound.
DWU competes next against Sterling College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9 in Sterling, Kan.
