Tiger women pick up tie against Midland
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team welcomed back leading goal scorer Megan Johnson to the lineup for a crucial Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup against Midland University Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team welcomed back leading goal scorer Megan Johnson to the lineup for a crucial Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup against Midland University Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
Johnson, a senior forward from Rapid City, S.D., scored a first half goal, her 23rd of the season, to put the Tigers up 1-0 on Midland before the visitors tied the game late in the second half. After two 10-minute overtime periods, the Tigers and Warriors stayed even for a 1-1 tie, the first tie for DWU in 2014.
The tie moves DWU to 8-7-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the GPAC. Caitlin Cooney scored the equalizer for Midland, which is now 11-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the GPAC.
Midland outshot DWU 23-8, while putting 11 shots on net compared to four from the Tigers. Senior forward Thara Ali Said (Muscat, Oman), who entered play following hat tricks in her last two games for DWU, let four shots go and put two on net in the tie.
Despite pressure from the Warriors throughout the game, freshman goalkeeper Cici Schneider (Sioux Falls, S.D.) stood tall throughout, making 10 saves.
The Tigers continue GPAC for senior night for the final regular-season home game against Briar Cliff University at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
