MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team was shutout for the third consecutive time in a 1-0 loss to Northwestern College (Iowa) in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Friday night at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
After falling behind early in a first half controlled by the Red Raiders, the Tigers fought back and dominated the pace of play after the break but failed to break through with the game-tying goal.
Tyler Farr scored the game's lone goal on an unassisted break away. She broke free from 35 yards out and dribbled around the keeper for the goal.
The Red Raiders outshot the Tigers 10-5 in the first half, but the field was slanted in the other direction in the second half when DWU held a 9-1 shot advantage.
With just under 30 minutes remaining in the game, DWU senior forward Megan Johnson (Rapid City, S.D.) was hit late and left the field with an injury on a play that resulted in a yellow card for Northwestern. The Tigers continued their second-half offensive push despite playing without the nation's leading scorer.
Senior forward Thara Ali Said (Muscat, Oman) had several chances to find the equalizer including a shot from 25 yards out that hit off the crossbar. Junior midfielder Maranda Ehrenfried (Pierre, S.D.) added three shots on net in the loss, which drops the Tigers to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the GPAC.
DWU will look to rebound against Doane College Saturday, Oct. 18 in Crete, Neb.
