Tigers drop two to Doane in GPAC doubleheader
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team opened the home portion of its Great Plains Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Doane College Saturday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team opened the home portion of its Great Plains Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader against Doane College Saturday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
DWU had difficulty keeping Doane off the scoreboard, dropping the first game 12-0 and the second 12-4 in six innings. The losses drop DWU to 5-21 overall and 0-6 in the GPAC.
Doane pitcher Ellie Doughty held DWU to one hit in game one, while the visiting team finished with 14 hits. Harley Horner led Doane at the plate with three hits, including a home run, a double and three RBIs. The lone DWU hit came from senior Natalie Gutierrez (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Sophomore Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) took the loss on the mound, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits, while walking two and striking out two in six innings of work. Loeppky is now 5-12 on the season.
In game two, Doane scored six times in the third inning and led 8-1 in the fourth. DWU cut the deficit to four with three runs in bottom of the fourth, but Doane added four more to end the game in the sixth inning.
Senior Danielle Klassen (Niverville, Manitba, Canada) led DWU in game two with four hits in four trips to the plate. She also scored one run and stole a base in the loss. Freshman pitcher Karlee Jenkins (Palmdale, Calif.) got the loss for DWU, pitching four innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out one.
The Tigers hit the field again for two games at Morningside College starting with a matchup against the University of Jamestown at noon on Sunday in Sioux City. DWU plays Dickinson State University at 2 p.m.
