Yellow Jackets sweep Tigers in nonconference DH

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team played its final nonconference home games of the regular season against Black Hills State University, an NCAA Division II program, Wednesday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
The Yellow Jackets pulled away early in game one for a 12-2 win in five innings. The Tigers fell behind early again in game two, but continued to fight back throughout. In the end, BHSU outlasted DWU and came away with an 11-6 victory for the sweep. The losses drop DWU to 8-26 overall.
In game one, BHSU scored two runs in each of the first two innings and piled on four more in the third. The game ended in the fifth after the Yellow Jackets scored four to take a 10-run lead. Freshman pitcher Karlee Jenkins (Palmdale, Calif.) took the loss in game one, allowing 12 runs, eight earned on 14 hits, while walking three and striking out three.
The Tigers finished with six hits and three errors in game one. Sophomore Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) and senior Natalie Gutierrez (Los Angeles, Calif.) each finished with two hits, while senior Kate Anderus (Lancaster, Calif.) had the lone DWU RBI.
Game two started in a similar fashion, with BHSU racing out a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second. The Tigers answered back with four in the second to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to 6-4. DWU loaded the bases with three straight walks in the second. Two errors by BHSU led to three DWU runs, while sophomore Miquela Kriskovich (Corvallis, Mont.) added an RBI.
After two runs from BHSU, junior Meghan Bovee (San Diego, Calif.) added an RBI single in the third for the Tigers. Down three in the fourth, senior Danielle Klassen (Niverville, Manitoba, Canada) hit a home run to again close the deficit to two runs. DWU did not get closer, as the Yellow Jackets added three more to secure the win and the sweep.
Jenkins went the distance for a second time in game two on the mound. She allowed 11 runs, eight earned on 13 hits, while walking five and striking out one.
The Tigers return to Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Nebraska Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. Friday in Lincoln, Neb.
