MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader against instate rival Mount Marty College in the cold and rain Tuesday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team split a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader against instate rival Mount Marty College in the cold and rain Tuesday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers pulled away late to top the Lancers 11-2 in six innings in the first game, but MMC got on track in game to for a 7-1 win in the finale. The split moves the Tigers to 8-24 overall and 3-7 midway through the GPAC season.
In game one, the Tigers and Lancers battled to a 2-2 tie through four and a half innings, but the DWU offense perked up. The Tigers got rolling with a two-run home run from sophomore Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah) in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
DWU piled on in the sixth inning, scoring seven runs to run rule the Lancers in six innings. Senior Natalie Gutierrez (Los Angeles, Calif.), Sutherland, senior Devinne Facile (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and sophomore Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) each picked up an RBI for the Tigers in the sixth. The game ended with a bases-loaded double from senior Katie Anderus (Lancaster, Calif.) that drove home three runs.
The Tigers got a strong performance from starting pitcher Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada). She pitched all six innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits and struck out two. The win was the third straight for Loeppky, who was named GPAC Pitcher-of-the-Week on Tuesday.
The Tigers finished game one with 15 hits and one error in the team's third straight win.
The Lancers got on track early in game two, scoring three runs on four hits in the first inning against Loeppky, who started her second game of the day. The Tigers struck back with a run in the second inning when Sutherland picked up an RBI double.
DWU did not get closer as the Lancers pushed four more runs across to secure the win. The Lancers were led by pitcher Katie Groteluschen, who threw all seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and walked two. Loeppky took the loss in game two, allowing seven runs, six earned on 10 hits and struck out one.
The Tigers step out of conference play for a doubleheader against Black Hills State University at 4 p.m. Wednesday at McWhirter Field.
