DWU softball wins four in Arizona, takes on SMSU today
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team finished 4-8 at the Tucson Invitational, closing out the event with a pair of wins. The Tigers return home and play Southwest Minnesota State University in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team finished 4-8 at the Tucson Invitational, closing out the event with a pair of wins. The Tigers return home and play Southwest Minnesota State University in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.
The Tigers (5-11) opened the week with two losses on day one before getting the bats going in a 15-5 win over Peru State University on day two. The Tigers slugged three home runs, two from junior Vanessa Mendez (Monterey Park, Calif.) and one from senior Natalie Guitierrez (Los Angeles, Calif.), while Mendez finished with seven RBIs. Sophomore Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) picked up the win in five innings of work.
After dropping its next two games, DWU got a sparkling performance from Loeppky in a 4-0 win over Missouri Valley College. Loeppky threw the complete game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out two. Sophomore Katy Lazenby (Mitchell, S.D.) provided the punch at the plate with a three-run triple in the fourth inning.
The Tigers notched two wins to close the trip with a 7-5 win over Purdue North Central (Ind.) and a 5-2 victory over Aquinas College (Mich.). Against PNCU, senior Katie Anderus (Lancaster, Calif.), Gutierrez and sophomore Miquela Krisovich (Corvallis, Mont.) each finished with two RBIs, while Loeppky picked up the win. Loeppky got her third win of the week with a complete game, two-run and six-hit outing against Aquinas. She struck out four in the win.
Including the four games played prior to the trip to Arizona, Menedez is leading the way at the plate for DWU with her power. She has five home runs, 18 RBIs and a .750 slugging percentage through 16 games. Senior Bailey Gummer (De Smet, S.D.) has a team-best .370 batting average with a home run and 10 hits. Junior Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) has provided power as well with three home runs, 10 RBIs and a .611 slugging percentage.
Loeppky has picked up all five Tiger wins this season, including the four in Arizona. She has a team-best 4.77 ERA with nine complete games and one shutout, while striking out 17 and walking 19.
