MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team picked up its first Great Plains Athletic Conference wins of the season with a sweep against Briar Cliff University Wednesday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers (7-23, 2-6 GPAC) snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 4-3 win in game one and followed it up a 5-0 game-two shutout, the first of the season for DWU.
The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one before DWU countered with two in the fourth and the fifth. Senior Natalie Gutierrez (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Elise Sutherland Stansbury, Utah) each drove in a run in the fourth inning for the Tigers, while senior Katie Anderus (Lancaster, Calif.) doubled home a pair in the fifth.
Briar Cliff closed the gap to one run in the sixth inning, but DWU starting pitcher Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) shut the Charger rally down in the seventh to pick up the win. Loeppky pitched seven innings allowing three runs on four hits, while walking five and striking out two.
Loeppky got the call for game two as well and put together an even more impressive encore. She pitched all seven innings for the second straight game, allowing no runs on three hits and struck out two. She faced just two batters more than the minimum. Loeppky is now 7-17 on the season.
Junior catcher Hailey Unger (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) gave the Tigers all the offense they would need with a two-run home run in the first inning. Unger was 3-for-3 and scored three runs in the second game, following a two-hit performance in game one. Senior Bailey Gummer (De Smet, S.D.) and Gutierrez each added an RBI in the game-two win.
The Tigers continue GPAC play with a doubleheader against Mount Marty College at 4 p.m. Tuesday at McWhirter Field.
