MARSHALL, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Southwest Minnesota State University Thursday in Rochester, Minn.
The Tigers put together a late rally in the first game, but fell 3-1 before dropping the final game 6-2. DWU falls to 5-13 this season after recently going 4-8 at the Tucson Invitational last week.
DWU trailed by two in the opener, but put two runners on base in the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Sophomore Lorissa Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) doubled to center to get the Tigers started in the seventh, followed by a single from sophomore Elise Sutherland (Stansbury, Utah). The game ended with pinch hitter Miquela Kriskovich (Corvallis, Mont.) grounding out.
Loeppky took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four. She is now 5-4 this season.
In the second game, SMSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before the Tigers tied the game with a pair in the top of the fourth. Junior Vanessa Mendez (Monterey Park, Calif.) drove in both runs on a double to left field. The Mustangs responded with two in their half of the fourth and two more in the fifth to capture the win.
Freshman Karlee Jenkins (Palmdale, Calif.) took the loss on the mound. She threw four innings, allowing six runs (four earned), while walking four and striking out two. Loeppky came in to pitch two scoreless innings of relief.
The Tigers enter Great Plains Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Hastings College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
