How It Happened
Game One:
The Tigers started in a good position after allowing only one run from the Pirates of Grand View in the top of the first inning. McKinnely Mull led off in the bottom of the inning reaching base after being hit by a pitch, but the Tigers left her there as they fell one-two-three after that. Things began to fall farther out of reach for DWU in the second and third innings as they allowed Grand View to score eight runs and trailed 9-0 heading into the bottom of the third. With one out already in the book, Mull stepped to the plate looking to reach base again; but instead, she sent the ball over the left field wall for her third homerun in four games to start the season. DWU was unable to earn another hit in the five-inning game as they fell to No. 11 Grand View.
Beyond the Results
- McKinnely Mull: 1-of-2, one run, one RBI, and a solo homerun
- Danielle Ratute: 1.1 IP allowing two hits, and three runs
- Keirstyn Krcil: 2.0 IP, allowing two walks, and striking out two
Game Two:
DWU was off and running in game two of the day against Buena Vista University after Mull led things off with a single to center field. Meghan Daffern stepped to the plate with one out and doubled, putting runners in scoring position. After the Tigers received their second out, Reagan Grossi opened her plate appearances with a triple bringing Mull and Daffern in for the 2-0 lead. Kaylie Mathiasen followed with a single of her own to center field allowing Grossi to trot home for the quick 3-0 lead. BVU sent a three-run homerun over the wall to tie the game back at 3-3 after the first. In the second, after Sophie Wietzema reached base on a double to right field with one out, Burke hit a single RBI, then advancing to second on the throw home taking the 4-3 lead. The Tigers followed up their one run half inning taking BVU down in order. After a quiet third inning from both sides, Wietzema singled to right allowing McKenna Thomason to score as they pushed their lead out to 5-3. A quick pitching change from Buena Vista, and Mull stepping into the box. On the season, Mull has the most homeruns of the Tigers, and she added another one in the fourth for a two RBI shot and giving the Tigers a 7-3 advantage. After a quick bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth inning, BVU grabbed a run after allowing a bases loaded walk, but then left BVU with bases loaded as play headed to the sixth. Buena Vista scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, tightening the margin 7-5. Top of the seventh, Burke got things rolling with a single for DWU. After some pinch hitters stepped to the plate looking to extend the Tigers lead, Mathiasen was the one to do that as she doubled to left field allowing Daffern and Burke to score for the 9-5 lead, BVU only grabbed one run in the bottom of the inning before a pair of consecutive lineouts to second base sealed the deal for the Tigers first win of the season. Daffern was credited with the win going five and one-third innings allowing eight hits, five runs, one walk, one run, and one homerun on 28 batters faced and 75 pitches thrown.
