Tigers take one from KWU in three-game series
SALINA, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team lost a doubleheader to Kansas Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon, but bounced back to beat the Coyotes in a single game Sunday afternoon in Salina, Kan.

SALINA, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team lost a doubleheader to Kansas Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon, but bounced back to beat the Coyotes in a single game Sunday afternoon in Salina, Kan.
The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Tigers, who are now 4-9 overall heading into their spring break trip. KWU beat Dakota Wesleyan 6-4 and 9-6 Saturday afternoon, but the Tigers came back with a 7-3 win Sunday.
Saturday afternoon, Kansas Wesleyan hit a two-run homer to go up 2-0 in the first inning, but the Tigers made it a one-run game in the third when Jon Holsworth scored on a wild pitch. KWU added a single run in the fourth on a solo home run and two in the fifth on an RBI triple and RBI single. The Tigers made it 5-3 on an RBI single from Nick Tadlock and an RBI double by Chris Ciatti, but the Coyotes scored again in the sixth on another solo homer. The Tigers got within two on an RBI single by Toby Kaplan in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
Seven players had a single hit for DWU, including doubles from Erik Nockleby and Ciatti. Ethan Opsahl threw the first five innings and took the loss. He gave up six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Josh Wagner threw the final inning and gave up a single hit.
In the second game of the day, Kansas Wesleyan went up 5-0 in the bottom of the first on a three-run homer and a two-run homer. DWU tied the game in the third inning thanks to a two-run single by Maximum Shower and RBI hits by Kaplan, Michael Lukkason and Ciatti, but KWU took the lead right back on a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. DWU got within one, 7-6, in the fourth on a sac fly by Shower, but the Coyotes scored twice in the sixth to pull away for the win.
Shower, Kaplan, Lukkason and Ciatti each had two hits for Dakota Wesleyan, which had 10 total hits. Kaplan and Lukkason both doubled for the Tigers, and Shower had three RBIs. Joey Fitzgerald threw the first three innings and took the loss. He gave up seven runs on five hits. Mickey Grant gave up two hits and struck out one in two innings, and Wagner and Kaysen Newman split the final inning. Wagner gave up two runs and struck out one batter.
In the third and final game of the weekend, Dakota Wesleyan took a lead in the first on an RBI single by Lukkason, and made it 2-0 in the fifth on an RBI triple by Shower. KWU scored once in the sixth on a passed ball, but Stephen Gunnell hit an RBI double in the sixth to put the Tigers up 3-1. The Coyotes tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer, but DWU scored three runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth for the win.
Sam Schumacher had an RBI double and Kaplan hit a two-run single in the eighth, and Holsworth ended the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth.
Gunnell had three hits to pace DWU Sunday afternoon. The Tigers had 11 total hits, including doubles by Schumacher and Gunnell and a triple from Shower. Nick Pecha threw the first five innings for DWU. He gave up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Chris Housley gave up one hit in a single inning of work, and Josh Wagner was credited with the win after giving up no runs and no hits in 1.1 innings of work. Nick McLimans and Zac Custer threw the final 1.2 innings.
Dakota Wesleyan is back in action Sunday, March 11, when it takes on St. Ambrose University in a doubleheader in Tucson, Ariz. The Tigers are in Tucson for their annual spring break trip March 11-17 when they play 12 games in seven days.
