Baseball starts 2012 with a trio of wins
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team started the 2012 season with a trio of wins over the weekend. The Tigers went 3-1 in a pair of doubleheaders against Dickinson State University at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn., on Feb. 17 and 18.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team started the 2012 season with a trio of wins over the weekend. The Tigers went 3-1 in a pair of doubleheaders against Dickinson State University at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn., on Feb. 17 and 18.
Friday afternoon, DWU kicked off the season with a pair of wins. The Tigers won their first game 4-1 and won the second game 3-1. Maximum Shower had two hits to pace DWU in its 4-1 win. The Tigers had six total hits and Michael Lukkason and Jon Holsworth each had an RBI. Ethan Opsahl picked up the win for the Tigers. He threw six innings and gave up three hits and one unearned run while striking out eight batters and walking just one. Zac Custer threw the final inning.
Six players had one hit each for DWU in its second win of the day, and Erik Nockleby had one RBI. Joey Fitzgerald threw all seven innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Saturday, the Tigers won their first game 6-3 but lost 8-4 to the Blue Hawks to end the weekend. In the day's first game, Kirk McBreen and Nockleby both had three hits for Dakota Wesleyan and Holsworth had two. Holsworth, Lukkason and Nockleby all doubled and Holsworth had three RBIs. Nockleby also had two RBIs. Nick Pecha threw the first six innings for DWU and gave up five hits, three runs and struck out six batters. Custer threw the final inning.
In their final game of the weekend, the Tigers gave up five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth in an 8-4 loss. Shower had three hits and Nick Tadlock added two for the Tigers, who had seven total hits. Nockleby and Tadlock both doubled, and both Nockleby and Stephen Gunnell had an RBI. Nick McLimans threw the first 3.2 innings and took the loss. He gave up five runs on three hits and struck out two batters. Alex Meyer and Josh Wagner each threw 1.2 innings. Meyer gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Dakota Wesleyan is back in action this weekend when it travels to Kansas for three doubleheaders. The Tigers play Sterling College Friday and Saturday Feb. 24-25 in Sterling, Kan., at noon both days. On Sunday, Feb. 26, DWU plays Bethany College at noon in Bethany, Kan.
