Morningside sweeps Tiger baseball
MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team’s bats fell silent Saturday afternoon in a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference losses to Morningside College. The Tigers had seven hits in the two games combined and lost 17-2 and 9-0 to the Mustangs at Drake Field.

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team's bats fell silent Saturday afternoon in a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference losses to Morningside College. The Tigers had seven hits in the two games combined and lost 17-2 and 9-0 to the Mustangs at Drake Field.
Morningside, on the other hand, had no trouble getting hits, despite the gusty wind that persisted throughout the afternoon. The Mustangs had 21 hits in a 17-2 win in the first game and 11 hits in a 9-0 win in game two of the doubleheader.
In the first game of the day, Morningside (27-12, 7-1 GPAC) scored four runs in the first inning and five more in the third to jump to an early lead. It also scored five in the fifth and a single run in three other innings. Dakota Wesleyan avoided the shutout with a run in the six on an RBI groundout by James McCaleb. The Tigers also scored in the seventh on an RBI double by Cody Reitz.
Erik Nockleby, Anthony Pakutka, Michael Lukkason and Reitz had DWU's only hits in the first game. Nick Pecha threw the first three innings and gave up 10 runs on 12 hits and took the loss. Schyler Bryan threw 1.1 innings and gave up five runs and Luke Bamberg gave up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in the final 2.2 innings of work.
The Mustangs scored once in the first and second innings of the second game, and added five runs in the third to pull ahead early once again. Morningside added a single run in the fourth and sixth, and had 11 hits to DWU's three. Nockleby, Nick Tadlock and Lukkason each had a hit for the Tigers.
Joey Fitzgerald threw the first three innings and gave up seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and was tagged with the loss. Mickey Grant threw two innings, and Chris Housley and Josh Wagner each threw an inning.
Dakota Wesleyan is now 14-26 overall and 3-5 in the GPAC. The Tigers are on the road Friday, April 13, when they travel to Orange City, Iowa, to take on Northwestern College at 5 p.m. DWU is back at home Sunday, April 15, when it hosts Midland University at 1 p.m. at Drake Field.
