DWU baseball goes 7-4 on spring break trip
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team went 7-4 on an 11-game, six-day spring break trip in Tucson, Ariz., recently. The Tigers swept two teams and picked up wins against two others over the course of the trip.

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team went 7-4 on an 11-game, six-day spring break trip in Tucson, Ariz., recently. The Tigers swept two teams and picked up wins against two others over the course of the trip.
The Tigers (11-13) started the trip with a sweep of St. Ambrose University on March 11. DWU won 15-13 and then beat the Fighting Bees 5-4 in eight innings on a walk-off RBI single by Stephen Gunnell in the nightcap. Ethan Opsahl and Joey Fitzgerald both picked up a win. Opsahl struck out five batters in six innings of work.
On March 12, the Tigers beat Norwich University (Vt.) 14-2 and lost 6-2 to Valley City State University. Against Norwich, Nick Tadlock had two hits and three RBIs – including a double – and Gunnell had two doubles. Nick McLimans earned the win. March 13, Dakota Wesleyan dropped a doubleheader to Dickinson State University. Dickinson won the first game 11-10 in eight innings on a walk-off two-run single by Jon Mendoza, and in the second game the Blue Hawks won 16-4.
The Tigers bounced back with a 7-2 win over Dickinson on March 15. Kirk McBreen tripled and Jon Holsworth homered for the Tigers. Opsahl threw all nine innings and struck out six to earn the win. That same day, DWU defeated Valley City 12-0 in seven innings. Nick Tadlock had two hits – including a home run – and four RBIs and Kirk McBreen had a three-run double.
Dakota Wesleyan swept VCSU 6-5 in eight innings and 7-2 on March 16. In the first win of the day, Holsworth hit an RBI in the eighth to send in the go-ahead run. He had three hits and three RBIs and Chris Ciatti had three hits and two RBIs. Chris Housley threw 3.2 innings and earned the win. In the nightcap, the Tigers scored seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away for the win. Tadlock had a two-run double and Michael Lukkason also had a double.
In its final game of the week, DWU lost 14-1 to Carthage College, an NCAA Division III school from Wisconsin ranked No. 19. Maximum Shower had two hits for the Tigers, who finished with six total hits.
The Tigers are back in action Thursday, March 22, when they travel to Madison, S.D., to take on Dakota State University. DWU is scheduled to open its home season March 28 when it hosts Mayville State in a nonconference doubleheader.
