MITCHELL, S.D. – In order to be successful, every baseball team needs to have a deep, talented pitching rotation to call upon. So far this offseason, Dakota Wesleyan University baseball coach Steve Gust has done a good job ensuring the Tigers will have a solid rotation for the 2013 season.
Gust, entering his fifth season with the DWU baseball team, has already signed six pitchers for next year, and this week he announced the signing of a seventh ace. Dell Rapids native Colin Karst recently signed to play with the Tigers starting with the 2013 season.
Karst comes to Dakota Wesleyan after four years of club baseball and three years of American Legion baseball in Dell Rapids, S.D. The 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher went 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA in 2011. He threw 40 innings and struck out 45 batters with just five walks and helped his team to an 8-5 record. He was also selected to play in the 2011 Legion All-Star game.
Karst, who plans to major in business at DWU, also lettered six times in golf and twice in basketball for the Quarriers. He was named the golf team's MVP in 2008 and 2010.
"We are excited to add Colin to our program," Gust said. "He is a good student-athlete from our area, and we believe he will develop into a very good pitcher for us."
Karst joins right-handed pitchers Luke Schultz (West Salem, Wis.) and Nate Jensen (Worthington, Minn.) and lefties Nate Everett (Papillion, Neb.); Jerrett Mills (Norfolk, Neb.) and Kevin Hatcher and Kyle Larson – both from Northland Community College – as new additions to the 2013 pitching staff. DWU lost just four players to graduation, including reigning Great Plains Athletic Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year Ethan Opsahl. The Tigers went 24-32 overall and 11-9 in the GPAC in 2012.
