MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team got its first look at a Great Plains Athletic Conference opponent Saturday morning when it played Northwestern College in a nonconference doubleheader at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Tigers led through five innings in the first game, but gave up two sixth-inning runs and fell 2-1 before losing 7-0 to the Red Raiders.
Dakota Wesleyan scored its only run of the day in the second inning of the first game. Nick Tadlock reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and third bases. He scored on a sac fly to deep right field by Chris Ciatti, and the Tigers were able to hold that lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Northwestern's first two batters popped out, and Stephen Englund reached on a walk. Cody Groskreutz reached on an error and Englund scored to tie the game. Noah Bohlmann singled and Mike Zoellner hit an RBI single that proved to be the eventual game-winner for the Red Raiders.
Stephen Gunnell, Jon Holsworth and Toby Kaplan had DWU's three hits, and Kaplan and Holsworth's were both doubles. Nick Pecha threw the first 5.2 innings and had a no-hitter until the fourth inning. He gave up one unearned run and struck out three batters. Chris Housley and Josh Wagner threw the remainder of the inning.
Northwestern seemed to have all the momentum in the second game. The Red Raiders took advantage of one hit and one error and scored three runs in the second inning, and added a fourth run in the third. Two more Tiger errors in the fifth led to two more Northwestern runs, and the Red Raiders stole home in the sixth to end the scoring.
Dakota Wesleyan had chances to score – Northwestern walked the bases loaded with two outs in the fifth inning, but all three runners were left stranded. Kirk McBreen had DWU's lone hit in the second game. Nick Anglin threw the first five innings and took the loss. He gave up six runs on five hits. Schyler Bryan and Zac Custer threw the final two innings.
The Tigers are now 11-17 overall and are back in action Wednesday, March 28, when they open their home season with a nonconference doubleheader against Mayville State University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Cadwell Park complex.
